Breaking Down the Barriers 1995-2005, Ten Years of Afe
21st September 2005 was Afe's 10th birthday! Incredible how time flies... I remember the day I went to a local shop to have the inserts of afe001ltd photocopied, and it seems just like yesterday. I was 25 then and I didn't think that Afe could become so important in my life.

Afe had more than 90 releases out during the years, including some double-sets and box-sets, and released music by more than 120 musicians/bands from around the globe! I will keep it short on this page, more info are available here.

Despite the quality both of the music and the packages, Afe is not a big business and will never be: I'll always try my best to keep it as friendly as I can, after all this is what its name means: Another Friendly Edition.

I'm sticking to this "rule" just like in the old days when CD-Rs were still not around and cassettes were the only affordable solution to release small editions. Passion is still the keyword for me, I truly hope that this is clearly tangible to everyone.

OK, I promised to keep it short, but here comes some obligatory notes: the music you can download from this page is legitimate property of the artists themselves, Afe doesn't own any rights at all on it. Every artist featured on this on-line compilation has kindly offered her/his contribution as a personal and symbolic present to celebrate the label's tenth year of activities.

My biggest THANK YOU!!! goes to all the musicians involved in making this *huge* collection available to the public. I owe my special thanks to the following people/friends for their extra help and kindness: Alberto Clara @ Sinewaves.it, Andrea Reali @ Ebriarecords, Bruno @ Bar La Muerte, Carlo Giordani, Chet @ Megaplomb, Chris @ Dark Music Domain, Cyril Caucat @ Arbouse Recordings, Daniel Crokaert @ Mystery Sea, Dmitry Vasilyev @ IEM, Fabio De Giorgi / H2S, Fabrizio and Simone @ Recycled, Hærleif / Non Ethos, Kitty Fraticelli / IOIOI, Lionel Marchetti, Mark Swift @ Switf Studio, Mirko @ Wallace, Otolab, Patrizia Oliva / Madame P, Stefano / a034, Stefano Gentile @ Silentes, Steven @ Benbecula, Vittore Baroni.

This compilation features about 400 tracks made by more than 250 musicians/band, all tracks are encoded at 192 kpbs, enjoy the music!!!

Please, have a look at the to read about the story and the updates made to this compilation.

"a034 is a one-man band. The project was born just like a game but became more serious when the first release was issued: Lobotomatik, by Bar La Muerte records (formerly Tijuana). After some years of live-sets experience I got in touch with Acid Drops, an italian techno group involved in parties mostly based on industrial sounds and hardcore beats. This fact made me able to begin playing at free parties... So I changed gear, passed from laptop to grooveboxes, abandoned the concept of "tracks" to follow a random assembling of techno patterns. Today a034 is a project still alive even if live events are more funny with friends, that's why a034 is involved in other musical projects with other people such as Nuke Satori, Six Figure Nigga and Lava."

aal is Davide Valecchi from Florence, Italy. He started this project in early 2001 with the precious support of Paolo Ippoliti and Laura Lovreglio [a.k.a. Logoplasm, owners of the S'Agita Recordings label]. Davide had a classical piano training in his childhood and then he focused his attention on electric guitars before finally discovering electronic music in the early '90s. He released two Cyberpunk / EBM albums as Diagonal Chains and a Drum'n'Bass album as Solenoid. He was briefly part of the Industrial / Nu-Metal band GF93 and he still is the guitarist of Videodiva, a band dealing with a mixture of Dark-Wave, Rock and Electronics. aal was conceived as an embodiment of a 'stream of consciousness', in which memories, dreams and portions of reality are mixed and cannot be separated. Electronics, concrete sounds and data flux try to evoke these elements following an istinctive course. He was featured on afe024mp3, afe030lcd, afe050lcd and afe50013. More information about him are available on his personal page in the "artists" section of this website.

Aalfang Mit Pferdekopf: Die Podersdorfer
Traumschleife

8:09

11.5 mb

"Aalfang Mit Pferdekopf is the somewhat strange name of german eclectic Mirko Uhlig's surreal exploring solo project... Mirko usually surrounds himself with a line-up of collaborators for his varied sound excursions... In the wake of a strong experimental legacy in his own country, and based upon a sort book of "no rules", these soundscapes mostly drift from loose improvisations using an array of different instruments, sometimes even incongruous, & field recordings... This could suggest an heterogeneous, shambolic ambience, but the resulting pieces are often surprisingly focused and intense...".

Pietro Alfredo Falagiani (former of the Alliance) was born in Milan. He received classical music training and graduated in aesthetical philosophy for communication sciences. In the 90s he released some obscure recordings in low-fi and minimal piano contexts, then he has been involved in pop music perspectives, widely influenced by afro-american culture of fifties, sixties and seventies. He is now working at the debut album of a project called the Alliance which presumably will be released in the fall of 2006. (A short extract from an Alliance demo may be heard on this site.)

Allun were born in Summer 1998 in the squat CSA La Sede in Vigevano (Pavia, Italy). Being in the gig-managing of this squat, the four girls of the original core (Stefania, Patrizia, Wanda and Katia), had the idea of starting a band. Their approach was pure and lacking of any musical references. Their visual side was very important, with grandguignolesque disguises and performances before and during their live shows. Their first 7" was released by Bar la Muerte in early 1999, their first CD was released in 2000 as a co-production between Bar La Muerte and Snowdonia. Several other releases followed during the years. The line-up changed quite a lot since the early days, and now Allun are a duo: Stefania and Natalia. Their website is available at:

Asofy first appeared in november 2000 at the hand of Tryfar, the only member and creator of the whole project. Asofy's aim is the simple and pure expression of its own thought and feelings. Using Italian language is very important both for an easier personal transposition from idea to text and to achieve coherence at a word-mean-emotion level, which only the mothertongue gives in a correct and exhaustive way. Well, maybe, I am not very explicit, music is my language. I just recorded AstroEpos, listen, you will understand..."

Bardoseneticcube
project was created in 1998 in Saint Petersburg, Russia, by Igor Potsukailo and Sergey Matveev. Their music is best described as industrial dark-ambient and it's inspired by the emotional condition of the post-industrial Soviet district. They create their music using computer, synthesizers, field-recordings and their own self-built or modified devices. In 2002 Sergey Matveev has created the Intershum project and nowadays Bardoseneticccube is Igor Potsukailo alone, often helped by many different musicians. Besides concerts, the project took part in many performances, exhibitions and installations. Actually their style is best described as surreal.

"Myth is simply the re-interpreting of perceptions of temporal phenomena in terms of the trans-temporal. The "myth" of Bestia Centauri is one that I intuited in precisely this way. It began when I saw the cover of Tangerine Dream's 1971 album Alpha Centauri. The cover was a strange, almost abstract black-and-white representation of that most proximate star, and it seeded my mind with a fascination with that region of the cosmos. In my meditations - a term that is much preferable to the New Age-like "pathworking" - I began to intuit a presence in this region: Bestia Centauri."

Borga, Ascanio: Self Interference

10:36

14.9 mb

Ascanio Borga, self-taught musician and independent composer, released his early "lo-fi" electronics works in 1997, under the monicker Vomit 2000. Later he began to compose electronic suites for synthesizers and treated instruments, progressively approaching avant-garde music. In the "Inner Geometry" (2001) and "Liquid Symmetries" (2002) albums, guitar drones and samples are also significantly employed beside electronics. The following "Bad Ground" (2006), a more obscure work closer to post-industrial music, is entirely built around treated guitar impovisations and is "enriched" with various sound events like synths and other noises. Improvisation has a fundamental role in Borga's music, but it's often supported by a dense work of overdubbing and "fine-tuning", with the purpose of giving the right balance of immediacy, sonic research, and structural complexity to the compositions. His website is available at:

Boros, Eric: The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald

5:45

8.1 mb

Eric Boros (Erik Boros) began his musical career as a school-band trumpetist at a young age. Since then he has performed many times in many different "nation states" around the globe, and has participated in a wide variety of phonographic recordings - despite having crumpled his trumpet a long time ago in a fit of rage. For his work with different ensembles he plays stringed acoustic and electric guitar mechanisms, while producing complex operatic "sounds" with his own voice, and is familiar with the "clarinet" (of the European woodwind family), and a plethora of different percussive objects. Although he lives without electricity, or any modern appliances (other than his solar-powered shortwave radio), he is a completely un-skilled electrician, and has used this "un-skill" to deconstruct electronic gadgets to generate accompianment frequencies to his symphonic pieces. Boros has been living in seclusion on an island in the far north of "Canada", but travels regularily to "Europe" by kayak for repetitions with other Vialka collective personnel. He is a strict vegetarian, book reader, practicing pacifist, and drinks a lot of herb tea. To get more information about his Hermit lifestyle, book collection, and phornograpic discography - please surf his website: vialka.com/eboros

Brand, Steve: Looking Into the Other

9:51

13.9 mb

Steve Brand
(formerly known as Augur) has been creating sound art and visual art since the mid-80's, and "makes obscure, organic music. His atmosphere, alarmingly austere, with varying shades of gray, are drenched in allusion and a heightened sense of cinematic noir for the listener." (TJ Norris - Igloo Magazine)

I am committed to the idea that art/music, more than being a product or an industry, is actually a fluid and transformative process (in an alchemical sense), with it's roots in our common ancient past and preconscious depths, and that the results of this process are maps of/to lost and uncharted realms. In a culture of encroaching technology, increasing hyper-rationality, and stifling binary thought, I feel it is not only a radical approach, but of increasing importance (as both an artist and as a male in this society), to address feeling, intuition, the unacknowledged subtleties of the totality of being. Mystery and discovery. I love the idea that sound might be the purest kind of communication. Some people have said that they hear and see some darkness in what I do: to me, what they interpret as darkness is a love of mystery. I feel that what we are as beings, collectively and individually, remains in shadow for most of us, and works of art made with the intention of delving into those mysteries can be an aural map to lost knowledge. I see my art work as documents that are infused with the energy of that intent. "Looking Into the Other" is the title track of one of 4 CDrs of sound work I've completed in 2005: "Looking..." utiltizes medicine drum, a small fiddle from India, voice, cedar flute and keyboards.

2.3 mb

The Barbuz duo was formed in 2004 and is composed of vocalist Manuela Barile and drummer Alessandro Buzzi. These musicians collaborated to create the project Sketches, which consists of brief flashes (no more than 3 minutes) of musical improvisation. Sketches is a dreamlike and visionary theatrical composition, the musical parallel of the unconditional flow of emotions, thoughts and alternating personalities that chase the rhythms of the snare drum, trumpet, voice and pantomime.
Barbuz's website is on-line at: stage.vitaminic.it/main/duo_barbuz

Oltre all'attività artistica conduce laboratori sulla vocalità creativa. Il suo sito è disponibile all'indirizzo: www.manuelabarile.com

Caul
began in 1993, while Brett Smith was a member of John Bergin’s band Trust Obey, a soon-to-be casualty of Nothing Records/Interscope. From Caul’s inception, it was a vehicle for sound exploration and spiritual expression, by turns beautiful, contemplative and unsettling. A year was spent working on material and in 1994 "Epiphany/Fortunate" was debuted on Brett’s self-owned label, Epiphany Recordings, followed by two more releases, "Whole" and "The Golden Section". All three recordings garnering praise in the burgening underground genre of dark ambient. 1996 saw both the fourth and fifth releases. "Crucible", courtesy of Malignant Records and "The Sound of Faith", courtesy of Katyn Records, each further cementing the reputation of Caul as one of the forerunners in the field. In 1997, Eibon released "Reliquary", one of the most popular Caul recordings aside from "Crucible" and 1998 was a return home to Malignant Records for "Light From Many Lamps". After so much activity, Brett rejoined John Bergin for recordings as Tertium Non Data and Blackmouth, the latter featuring Jarboe of Swans on vocals. 2003 marked the return of Caul with "Hidden", considered to be one of Brett’s darkest works. "Hidden" the first installment in a 3 part work, continued with "Muein" released by John Bergin’s Grinder label in 2002. That year also saw the resumed operations of Epiphany Records which debuted "SWAN" a collection of compilation and unreleased recordings. Eibon Records followed with "A Golden Epiphany" a special set encompassing the complete first three Caul recordings. A remixed and remastered version of "Crucible" was released in 2004 on Epiphany Records and 2005 sees Caul moving ever forward with several releases slated and more in the works. "Coma Divine are coming from a creative necessity, from a constant sound research. The two entities who create, change, deconstruct and assemble all sounds are c768 and Nox, both Weltschmerz members (drummer and keyboard respectively). Their necessity to give their artistic identities a shape brought to the creation of Coma Divine, whose project was born in 2001, after some sessions bringing to the setting up of the first tracks of noises, sounds and experimental material."

Come dargli torto? O, come dargli ragione? Nientemeno, parbleu.

Deison
is Deison. Involved in the noise electronic area since 1991 (he was a member of Meathead), he approached the world of sounds with self-released cassettes created using his own collages made with tape recorders, turntables and objects. He established a small label (Loud!) and began to collaborate with artists such as Lasse Marhaug, KK Null, Sshe Retina Stimulants, etc., influenced by electroacoustic music, ambient and minimal electronics. Due to his great interest into digital music and sound design then he operated with samplers and field recordings. On Loud! he has released a couple of 7" singles and a record with Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth) plus a lot of compilation appearances. His first CD, entitled "Dirty Blind Vortex" was released in the USA by Crionic Mind. His new releases in mp3 format show the new sound direction taken by Deison: calm waves of looping deep ambient scapes, penetrated with sample fragments and light additional noise-ambient textures form a silent, minimal frame-set. He also contibutes sounds for his more dark-ambient duo Cinise. He works as a DJ in an independent local radio (Loud! radioshow) playing electronic, avantgarde and experimental music and is the co-founder of the label FinalMuzik.

Der Einzige is the very first musical project of Hue. It started in 1995 with stupid experimental music/noise made with the poorest equipment you can imagine, and now has moved to new strange artistic territories. His philosophy was this: "it doesn't matter what you have, you can express yourself with sounds and noises without spending a lot of money". None of the four albums made so far has been officially published outside the close circle of Moriremo Tutti Records, except for the track"Adhesive Metal" released by Deterrent Industries the "Embedded" compilation. Der Einzige played live at Superfici Sonore in 2003.

I Deviated Sister T.V. Contatti: zeroaleph@tiscali.it

Jacopo Andreini plays everything, smashes everything, reverses everything, exploits everything. He don't care about the style, the way, the praxis, the theory, the common sense. He loves to do what it comes in his mind taking care of the issue just after. He loves to work with similar people but different. You need unquestionability to deal with him, otherwise nothing. He happily plays drums, percussions, pots, saxophones, cornet, guitar, bass, basstarra, contrabajissimo (selfmade instruments), sampler, computer, drum machines, synth, bad keyboards, tubes, blue ducks. Since 1988 he has played a lot, recorded the 90% of what he played, released the 50% of what he recorded, distributed the 30% of what he released and this 30% of 50% of 90% makes anyway 60 albums and partecipations, 20 books and a lot of concerts where is possible to play without guns pointed at your back. They have written like 100 reviews about his music, but his last idea is to collect them to create a monument, if you had the chance to read 'em somewhere is good, otherwise go check in the same old places. His favourites friends musicians are Nando Meet Corrosion members, ex-Bz BZ Ueu guys, Edoardo Ricci, Francesco Donnini and Pippo Picchietti ex-NEEM, Eugenio Sanna, Gi Gasparin, Kevino Branstetter and Kevin Cascell from Trumans Water, Bruno Dorella, Stefania and Patrizia from Allun, Silvia Grosso from Larsen, François Cambuzat and Chiara Locardi, Simone Molinaroli from Ass Cult Press, Andrea De Witt, Raffaele Ferro from Suite Inc., and some others who cross less often. And there's also the non-musical friends. But who cares, anyway. He likes to take pictures of women, to eat chocolate, Giovanni's sandwich from Livorno, the lardo of Colonnata and he fights his chronical gastritis saying fuck off. Better have AIDS than diabetis. Ecclesiastical Scaffolding: The Persistence of
Mammaries

3:00

4.2 mb

"Around 1983 I started experimenting with electronics and tape, utilising a crude home-made mixer and electronics devices. Spurred on by the industrial/electronic scene in Melbourne at the time, I purchased a number of synthesisers and other electronic devices and began to construct more elaborate pieces, though more for my own interest than for any perceived 'audience'. After a few years I became interested in more esoteric forms of music, having read about the works of John Cage and through listening to some of the more interesting artists producing music in Europe and England. I started experimenting with new techniques, such as collage, acoustic sound sources, and location recordings. Around this time I found other people interested in what I was doing, and also became involved in collaborative work with the short-lived group "Vale of Stone" and most notably one member of that collective, Paul McDonald. Paul went on to release the compilation "Massaconfusa" which contains the first Ecclesiastical Scaffolding piece (released under my own name), as well as other artists such as Asmus Tietchens, H.N.A.S., Merzbow, P16D4, Vivenza and Ramleh. Around this time I had become friendly with Roger Richards, who was involved in promoting new and challenging music on local radio. Roger reformed the existing Extreme cassette label and offered to release some of my material. A number of other non-ES projects ensued, but then I felt that things had run their course for the time, and turned my attention to other, personal matters. A long hiatus followed, during which I moved to Hobart, Tasmania. A few years ago I found myself becoming interested once again in realising some of my musical aims, and to that end began setting up my own studio here in Tasmania, so that I could record and produce music. In the past three years I have been steadily producing a body of new work."

Eniac is a (human – electronic) musical project by Fabio Battistetti, started in 1998 as lo-fi experimentation, as a research in the well-known (samples) with the purpose of trasforming (distorsions) and re-elaborate it, a technique that eniac describes as:"something new from something that isn't". Essentially, it is a means of express our inner-selves, and to research what is known to re-evaluate old ways of thinking and feeling, in favour of new concepts. The project has evolved to a more concrete and musical structure, and today is a constantly evolving set of electro music, from melodic glitch to the explosion of rhythms. Esa is the moniker chosen by Luigi Turra for his artistic activities: graphic design, photography, music and mixed-media. Since year 2000, using electronic equipment, he pointed his research research toward a modern estetic of minimal reduction. His interest for the multidisciplinary dimension of art comunication - of which Esa is a programmatic expression - brings him to create different levels of digital composition, where the result is an artwork "in transit", from the sound to the image, from the physical space to the virtuality of the web. Eto Ami: 2 Pieces

[This is a special contribute, please click on the
little yellow square to open it in a pop-up window]

The duo of Dean King and Tomas Phillips came together as Eto Ami in 2000 with the mere intention of exploring a shared aesthetic. This partnership soon developed a trajectory of its own, however, compelling us to push the compositional process towards further levels of refinement and performative dexterity. What this continues to mean for us is the achievement of a balance between digital and non-digital sound and a functional recognition of their differences in terms of utility and signification. Whilst computer technology remains central to our work, we make an effort to locate composition within a space of physicality, a space in which the composing subject(s) is allowed to "become," in the language of Deleuze, alongside the relative self-sufficiency of software. Hence our use of acoustic instrumentation and field recordings gathered on the periphery of laptops. By extension, we seek to foreground the act of listening (as composers and audience alike) in the slowly evolving tradition of microsound, without precluding the possibility of active and engaged harmony. Implicit in our work, then, is the notion that melodiousness does not necessarily imply a compromised territorialization. Their website is available at: www.etoami.com

Existential Dilemma: Ariadne

3:57

5.6 mb

Existential Dilemma coagulated into a musical entity over the span of about three years, finally churning out sounds at shows in 2001. Over the course of its four year lifespan, Existential Dilemma cycled through 12 members, played 45 shows in the mid western United States, and created five releases. The music of Existential Dilemma was diverse in content and structure, ranging from austere doom-metal lamentations to ethereal ambient improvisations and post-rock interludes. Though there was no consistent conceptual goal of the band, a reoccurring theme was an interest in creating subjective music. To that end, lyrics were never distinguishable and songs were never "about" anything, allowing the listeners to assign their own meaning. Existential Dilemma disbanded in May of 2005 and is currently planning two post-humus releases. This currently unreleased song titled "Ariadne" will appear on one of them.
