"The brutality of misbreathing, just like being choked by the anxiety of an endless resonating emptiness, uselessly searching for a way out of loneliness. Spending days with half-closed eyes, hoping to dream reality away for as long as possible, observing a new failure in the early morning light. Trying to fill an ever-growing lack of warmth with self-made illusions, still feeling alive as tears flow down lapping the edge of a broken nose."

"The Brutality of Misbreathing" is Andrea Marutti's first full-lenght release published under his own name. He is better known for his Amon and Never Known projects and as Afe Records label owner. His music has been published by Eibon Records, Amplexus, Drone Records, Taâlem, etc. This album is a one hour journey between dramatic dark atmospheres and drone-based ambiences in slow and continous evolution. Echoes of reverbered metallic sounds and sharp circular loops, electronic elements and saturated signals close to distortion emerge each now and then from the disquieting sound mass. The music flows in a persistent alternation of majestic crescendos and quiet discreet stases; a sense of tension and discomfort permeates the whole disc, just like being stuck in a long and appearently never-ending bad dream...*

*Description taken from the original press-release.

"A truly breathtaking experience: An album about choking and a lack of air - How far can you go without saying a word? While drone music in its purest form is nothing but harmony and harmonics and can therefore be considered a total immersion into one of music's constitutional factors, genres such as Noise, Dark Ambient and sound art in their most extreme shapes are characterised by the total absence of such factors at all. “The Brutality of Misbreathing” falls into the latter category – and yet manages to create the illusion of a musical safety net. Described as “dramatic dark atmospheres” by the label, there is quite a lot more going on here than your average trip to the gates of hell and back again. Marutti is one of the game's longest-standing players and an open mind sharpened by collaborations with plentiful colleagues. He knows that it is easy to create disgust, much harder to awaken fear and even more difficult to create true confusion, disorientation and the feeling of spiralling down an endless tunnel with no beginning nor end. “The Brutality of Misbreathing” takes the same stance towards music as David Lynch does to filming: It doesn't matter if you understand it all, as long as you're getting a breathtaking experience out of it: Colossal clusters melt in and out of each other, grey clouds of unknown origin pulsate at different rates and drift by in uneasy and confrontational postures, traces of sustained atonal voices struggle to press their lips against the glass, hands trying to break open the plastic. As the title already suggests, the album is about choking and a lack of air, but it doesn't only open the eyes for corridors of panic, but to the majesty or greater principle behind the agony. Marutti errects giant reverbed spaces, which act like frames in which his hazy tectonics take place, only occasionaly decorated with far-away metallic rumblings and delayed and foreign field recordings. The organic way in which the music moves has a lot to do with its compositional background: Using live recordings from a concert in December of 2006, the tracks were enhanced in the studio at the beginning of this year. Not that it has made these sound masses any easier to penetrate, but the fact alone that things seem to be “going somewhere”, instead of just marking time makes one's heart beat more gently and allows the mind to enjoy rather than dread the trip. Even the pandemonic outburst of noise at the very end almost comes across as a relief. Go one step further, however, and words will fail you."

"Andrea Marutti è l'uomo dietro all'Afe Records e ai progetti Amon e Never Known.

"Andrea Marutti, also known as "The Afeman", has been active in the experimental electronic scene since the early 90's when he appeared with the projects A2M and Spiral. Over the years he's also been a part of Lips Vago, Never Known, Amon and several other projects, bands and collaborations. If that wasn't enough, he's also the owner of Afe Records, which has been active for twelve years now. Most recently though Andrea has begun releasing material under his own name, and "The Brutality of Misbreathing" is his first full length album after a few other releases these past couple of years. To date my only experience with Andrea's music has been with Amon, and my experience was limited to just a few random mp3's, but I do remember enjoying what I heard. Going into this new full length from Andrea the listener can expect four songs totaling for fiftyeight minutes of Dark Ambient music. Although the music on this recording is kind of similar in style most of the way and it isn't really particularly melodic either, it still manages to be a very enjoyable recording as Andrea takes the listener through the realms of what I could only describe as a really bad nightmare. That is to say if you dream with a soundtrack playing in the background, then perhaps this is what it would sound like. The music is basically dark droning ambient with a bit of a sinister vibe to it and some industrial characteristics present here and there. Not the most profound thing and not the most original thing either, but I always seem to enjoy this sort of ambient music. If you've found yourself enjoying music of similar style in the past you'll probably enjoy Andrea's music. And I certainly wouldn't mind hearing future recordings from him either."

"“Non sarà una cosa piacevole”. Questo l'incipit del concerto che Andrea Marutti ha tenuto all'Arci Blob di Arcore l' 8 Dicembre del 2006, in occasione della prima edizione della rassegna sperimentale "Italians Do It Better" (per chi fosse interessato è presente un report qui - www.greysparkle.com).

(Through Half-closed Eyes) introduce all'iperspazio dell'angoscia che vibra soprattutto nelle risonanze metalliche della seconda parte.
