Breaking Down the Barriers 1995-2005, Ten Years of Afe
21st September 2005 was Afe's 10th birthday! Incredible how time flies... I remember the day I went to a local shop to have the inserts of afe001ltd photocopied, and it seems just like yesterday. I was 25 then and I didn't think that Afe could become so important in my life.

Afe had more than 90 releases out during the years, including some double-sets and box-sets, and released music by more than 120 musicians/bands from around the globe! I will keep it short on this page, more info are available here.

Despite the quality both of the music and the packages, Afe is not a big business and will never be: I'll always try my best to keep it as friendly as I can, after all this is what its name means: Another Friendly Edition.

I'm sticking to this "rule" just like in the old days when CD-Rs were still not around and cassettes were the only affordable solution to release small editions. Passion is still the keyword for me, I truly hope that this is clearly tangible to everyone.

OK, I promised to keep it short, but here comes some obligatory notes: the music you can download from this page is legitimate property of the artists themselves, Afe doesn't own any rights at all on it. Every artist featured on this on-line compilation has kindly offered her/his contribution as a personal and symbolic present to celebrate the label's tenth year of activities.

My biggest THANK YOU!!! goes to all the musicians involved in making this *huge* collection available to the public. I owe my special thanks to the following people/friends for their extra help and kindness: Alberto Clara @ Sinewaves.it, Andrea Reali @ Ebriarecords, Bruno @ Bar La Muerte, Carlo Giordani, Chet @ Megaplomb, Chris @ Dark Music Domain, Cyril Caucat @ Arbouse Recordings, Daniel Crokaert @ Mystery Sea, Dmitry Vasilyev @ IEM, Fabio De Giorgi / H2S, Fabrizio and Simone @ Recycled, Hærleif / Non Ethos, Kitty Fraticelli / IOIOI, Lionel Marchetti, Mark Swift @ Switf Studio, Mirko @ Wallace, Otolab, Patrizia Oliva / Madame P, Stefano / a034, Stefano Gentile @ Silentes, Steven @ Benbecula, Vittore Baroni.

This compilation features about 400 tracks made by more than 250 musicians/band, all tracks are encoded at 192 kpbs, enjoy the music!!!

Please, have a look at the to read about the story and the updates made to this compilation.

"a034 is a one-man band. The project was born just like a game but became more serious when the first release was issued: Lobotomatik, by Bar La Muerte records (formerly Tijuana). After some years of live-sets experience I got in touch with Acid Drops, an italian techno group involved in parties mostly based on industrial sounds and hardcore beats. This fact made me able to begin playing at free parties... So I changed gear, passed from laptop to grooveboxes, abandoned the concept of "tracks" to follow a random assembling of techno patterns. Today a034 is a project still alive even if live events are more funny with friends, that's why a034 is involved in other musical projects with other people such as Nuke Satori, Six Figure Nigga and Lava."

aal is Davide Valecchi from Florence, Italy. He started this project in early 2001 with the precious support of Paolo Ippoliti and Laura Lovreglio [a.k.a. Logoplasm, owners of the S'Agita Recordings label]. Davide had a classical piano training in his childhood and then he focused his attention on electric guitars before finally discovering electronic music in the early '90s. He released two Cyberpunk / EBM albums as Diagonal Chains and a Drum'n'Bass album as Solenoid. He was briefly part of the Industrial / Nu-Metal band GF93 and he still is the guitarist of Videodiva, a band dealing with a mixture of Dark-Wave, Rock and Electronics. aal was conceived as an embodiment of a 'stream of consciousness', in which memories, dreams and portions of reality are mixed and cannot be separated. Electronics, concrete sounds and data flux try to evoke these elements following an istinctive course. He was featured on afe024mp3, afe030lcd, afe050lcd and afe50013. More information about him are available on his personal page in the "artists" section of this website.

Aalfang Mit Pferdekopf: Die Podersdorfer
Traumschleife

8:09

11.5 mb

"Aalfang Mit Pferdekopf is the somewhat strange name of german eclectic Mirko Uhlig's surreal exploring solo project... Mirko usually surrounds himself with a line-up of collaborators for his varied sound excursions... In the wake of a strong experimental legacy in his own country, and based upon a sort book of "no rules", these soundscapes mostly drift from loose improvisations using an array of different instruments, sometimes even incongruous, & field recordings... This could suggest an heterogeneous, shambolic ambience, but the resulting pieces are often surprisingly focused and intense...".

Pietro Alfredo Falagiani (former of the Alliance) was born in Milan. He received classical music training and graduated in aesthetical philosophy for communication sciences. In the 90s he released some obscure recordings in low-fi and minimal piano contexts, then he has been involved in pop music perspectives, widely influenced by afro-american culture of fifties, sixties and seventies. He is now working at the debut album of a project called the Alliance which presumably will be released in the fall of 2006. (A short extract from an Alliance demo may be heard on this site.)

Allun were born in Summer 1998 in the squat CSA La Sede in Vigevano (Pavia, Italy). Being in the gig-managing of this squat, the four girls of the original core (Stefania, Patrizia, Wanda and Katia), had the idea of starting a band. Their approach was pure and lacking of any musical references. Their visual side was very important, with grandguignolesque disguises and performances before and during their live shows. Their first 7" was released by Bar la Muerte in early 1999, their first CD was released in 2000 as a co-production between Bar La Muerte and Snowdonia. Several other releases followed during the years. The line-up changed quite a lot since the early days, and now Allun are a duo: Stefania and Natalia. Their website is available at:

Asofy first appeared in november 2000 at the hand of Tryfar, the only member and creator of the whole project. Asofy's aim is the simple and pure expression of its own thought and feelings. Using Italian language is very important both for an easier personal transposition from idea to text and to achieve coherence at a word-mean-emotion level, which only the mothertongue gives in a correct and exhaustive way. Well, maybe, I am not very explicit, music is my language. I just recorded AstroEpos, listen, you will understand..."

Bardoseneticcube
project was created in 1998 in Saint Petersburg, Russia, by Igor Potsukailo and Sergey Matveev. Their music is best described as industrial dark-ambient and it's inspired by the emotional condition of the post-industrial Soviet district. They create their music using computer, synthesizers, field-recordings and their own self-built or modified devices. In 2002 Sergey Matveev has created the Intershum project and nowadays Bardoseneticccube is Igor Potsukailo alone, often helped by many different musicians. Besides concerts, the project took part in many performances, exhibitions and installations. Actually their style is best described as surreal.

"Myth is simply the re-interpreting of perceptions of temporal phenomena in terms of the trans-temporal. The "myth" of Bestia Centauri is one that I intuited in precisely this way. It began when I saw the cover of Tangerine Dream's 1971 album Alpha Centauri. The cover was a strange, almost abstract black-and-white representation of that most proximate star, and it seeded my mind with a fascination with that region of the cosmos. In my meditations - a term that is much preferable to the New Age-like "pathworking" - I began to intuit a presence in this region: Bestia Centauri."

Borga, Ascanio: Self Interference

10:36

14.9 mb

Ascanio Borga, self-taught musician and independent composer, released his early "lo-fi" electronics works in 1997, under the monicker Vomit 2000. Later he began to compose electronic suites for synthesizers and treated instruments, progressively approaching avant-garde music. In the "Inner Geometry" (2001) and "Liquid Symmetries" (2002) albums, guitar drones and samples are also significantly employed beside electronics. The following "Bad Ground" (2006), a more obscure work closer to post-industrial music, is entirely built around treated guitar impovisations and is "enriched" with various sound events like synths and other noises. Improvisation has a fundamental role in Borga's music, but it's often supported by a dense work of overdubbing and "fine-tuning", with the purpose of giving the right balance of immediacy, sonic research, and structural complexity to the compositions. His website is available at:

Boros, Eric: The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald

5:45

8.1 mb

Eric Boros (Erik Boros) began his musical career as a school-band trumpetist at a young age. Since then he has performed many times in many different "nation states" around the globe, and has participated in a wide variety of phonographic recordings - despite having crumpled his trumpet a long time ago in a fit of rage. For his work with different ensembles he plays stringed acoustic and electric guitar mechanisms, while producing complex operatic "sounds" with his own voice, and is familiar with the "clarinet" (of the European woodwind family), and a plethora of different percussive objects. Although he lives without electricity, or any modern appliances (other than his solar-powered shortwave radio), he is a completely un-skilled electrician, and has used this "un-skill" to deconstruct electronic gadgets to generate accompianment frequencies to his symphonic pieces. Boros has been living in seclusion on an island in the far north of "Canada", but travels regularily to "Europe" by kayak for repetitions with other Vialka collective personnel. He is a strict vegetarian, book reader, practicing pacifist, and drinks a lot of herb tea. To get more information about his Hermit lifestyle, book collection, and phornograpic discography - please surf his website: vialka.com/eboros

Brand, Steve: Looking Into the Other

9:51

13.9 mb

Steve Brand
(formerly known as Augur) has been creating sound art and visual art since the mid-80's, and "makes obscure, organic music. His atmosphere, alarmingly austere, with varying shades of gray, are drenched in allusion and a heightened sense of cinematic noir for the listener." (TJ Norris - Igloo Magazine)

I am committed to the idea that art/music, more than being a product or an industry, is actually a fluid and transformative process (in an alchemical sense), with it's roots in our common ancient past and preconscious depths, and that the results of this process are maps of/to lost and uncharted realms. In a culture of encroaching technology, increasing hyper-rationality, and stifling binary thought, I feel it is not only a radical approach, but of increasing importance (as both an artist and as a male in this society), to address feeling, intuition, the unacknowledged subtleties of the totality of being. Mystery and discovery. I love the idea that sound might be the purest kind of communication. Some people have said that they hear and see some darkness in what I do: to me, what they interpret as darkness is a love of mystery. I feel that what we are as beings, collectively and individually, remains in shadow for most of us, and works of art made with the intention of delving into those mysteries can be an aural map to lost knowledge. I see my art work as documents that are infused with the energy of that intent. "Looking Into the Other" is the title track of one of 4 CDrs of sound work I've completed in 2005: "Looking..." utiltizes medicine drum, a small fiddle from India, voice, cedar flute and keyboards.

2.3 mb

The Barbuz duo was formed in 2004 and is composed of vocalist Manuela Barile and drummer Alessandro Buzzi. These musicians collaborated to create the project Sketches, which consists of brief flashes (no more than 3 minutes) of musical improvisation. Sketches is a dreamlike and visionary theatrical composition, the musical parallel of the unconditional flow of emotions, thoughts and alternating personalities that chase the rhythms of the snare drum, trumpet, voice and pantomime.
Barbuz's website is on-line at: stage.vitaminic.it/main/duo_barbuz

Oltre all'attività artistica conduce laboratori sulla vocalità creativa. Il suo sito è disponibile all'indirizzo: www.manuelabarile.com

Caul
began in 1993, while Brett Smith was a member of John Bergin’s band Trust Obey, a soon-to-be casualty of Nothing Records/Interscope. From Caul’s inception, it was a vehicle for sound exploration and spiritual expression, by turns beautiful, contemplative and unsettling. A year was spent working on material and in 1994 "Epiphany/Fortunate" was debuted on Brett’s self-owned label, Epiphany Recordings, followed by two more releases, "Whole" and "The Golden Section". All three recordings garnering praise in the burgening underground genre of dark ambient. 1996 saw both the fourth and fifth releases. "Crucible", courtesy of Malignant Records and "The Sound of Faith", courtesy of Katyn Records, each further cementing the reputation of Caul as one of the forerunners in the field. In 1997, Eibon released "Reliquary", one of the most popular Caul recordings aside from "Crucible" and 1998 was a return home to Malignant Records for "Light From Many Lamps". After so much activity, Brett rejoined John Bergin for recordings as Tertium Non Data and Blackmouth, the latter featuring Jarboe of Swans on vocals. 2003 marked the return of Caul with "Hidden", considered to be one of Brett’s darkest works. "Hidden" the first installment in a 3 part work, continued with "Muein" released by John Bergin’s Grinder label in 2002. That year also saw the resumed operations of Epiphany Records which debuted "SWAN" a collection of compilation and unreleased recordings. Eibon Records followed with "A Golden Epiphany" a special set encompassing the complete first three Caul recordings. A remixed and remastered version of "Crucible" was released in 2004 on Epiphany Records and 2005 sees Caul moving ever forward with several releases slated and more in the works. The two entities who create, change, deconstruct and assemble all sounds are c768 and Nox, both Weltschmerz members (drummer and keyboard respectively). Their necessity to give their artistic identities a shape brought to the creation of Coma Divine, whose project was born in 2001, after some sessions bringing to the setting up of the first tracks of noises, sounds and experimental material."

Come dargli torto? O, come dargli ragione? Nientemeno, parbleu.

Deison
is Deison. Involved in the noise electronic area since 1991 (he was a member of Meathead), he approached the world of sounds with self-released cassettes created using his own collages made with tape recorders, turntables and objects. He established a small label (Loud!) and began to collaborate with artists such as Lasse Marhaug, KK Null, Sshe Retina Stimulants, etc., influenced by electroacoustic music, ambient and minimal electronics. Due to his great interest into digital music and sound design then he operated with samplers and field recordings. On Loud! he has released a couple of 7" singles and a record with Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth) plus a lot of compilation appearances. His first CD, entitled "Dirty Blind Vortex" was released in the USA by Crionic Mind. His new releases in mp3 format show the new sound direction taken by Deison: calm waves of looping deep ambient scapes, penetrated with sample fragments and light additional noise-ambient textures form a silent, minimal frame-set. He also contibutes sounds for his more dark-ambient duo Cinise. He works as a DJ in an independent local radio (Loud! radioshow) playing electronic, avantgarde and experimental music and is the co-founder of the label FinalMuzik.

Der Einzige is the very first musical project of Hue. It started in 1995 with stupid experimental music/noise made with the poorest equipment you can imagine, and now has moved to new strange artistic territories. His philosophy was this: "it doesn't matter what you have, you can express yourself with sounds and noises without spending a lot of money". None of the four albums made so far has been officially published outside the close circle of Moriremo Tutti Records, except for the track"Adhesive Metal" released by Deterrent Industries the "Embedded" compilation. Der Einzige played live at Superfici Sonore in 2003.

Jacopo Andreini plays everything, smashes everything, reverses everything, exploits everything. He don't care about the style, the way, the praxis, the theory, the common sense. He loves to do what it comes in his mind taking care of the issue just after. He loves to work with similar people but different. You need unquestionability to deal with him, otherwise nothing. He happily plays drums, percussions, pots, saxophones, cornet, guitar, bass, basstarra, contrabajissimo (selfmade instruments), sampler, computer, drum machines, synth, bad keyboards, tubes, blue ducks. Since 1988 he has played a lot, recorded the 90% of what he played, released the 50% of what he recorded, distributed the 30% of what he released and this 30% of 50% of 90% makes anyway 60 albums and partecipations, 20 books and a lot of concerts where is possible to play without guns pointed at your back. They have written like 100 reviews about his music, but his last idea is to collect them to create a monument, if you had the chance to read 'em somewhere is good, otherwise go check in the same old places. His favourites friends musicians are Nando Meet Corrosion members, ex-Bz BZ Ueu guys, Edoardo Ricci, Francesco Donnini and Pippo Picchietti ex-NEEM, Eugenio Sanna, Gi Gasparin, Kevino Branstetter and Kevin Cascell from Trumans Water, Bruno Dorella, Stefania and Patrizia from Allun, Silvia Grosso from Larsen, François Cambuzat and Chiara Locardi, Simone Molinaroli from Ass Cult Press, Andrea De Witt, Raffaele Ferro from Suite Inc., and some others who cross less often. And there's also the non-musical friends. But who cares, anyway. He likes to take pictures of women, to eat chocolate, Giovanni's sandwich from Livorno, the lardo of Colonnata and he fights his chronical gastritis saying fuck off. Better have AIDS than diabetis. Ecclesiastical Scaffolding: The Persistence of
Mammaries

3:00

4.2 mb

"Around 1983 I started experimenting with electronics and tape, utilising a crude home-made mixer and electronics devices. Spurred on by the industrial/electronic scene in Melbourne at the time, I purchased a number of synthesisers and other electronic devices and began to construct more elaborate pieces, though more for my own interest than for any perceived 'audience'. After a few years I became interested in more esoteric forms of music, having read about the works of John Cage and through listening to some of the more interesting artists producing music in Europe and England. I started experimenting with new techniques, such as collage, acoustic sound sources, and location recordings. Around this time I found other people interested in what I was doing, and also became involved in collaborative work with the short-lived group "Vale of Stone" and most notably one member of that collective, Paul McDonald. Paul went on to release the compilation "Massaconfusa" which contains the first Ecclesiastical Scaffolding piece (released under my own name), as well as other artists such as Asmus Tietchens, H.N.A.S., Merzbow, P16D4, Vivenza and Ramleh. Around this time I had become friendly with Roger Richards, who was involved in promoting new and challenging music on local radio. Roger reformed the existing Extreme cassette label and offered to release some of my material. A number of other non-ES projects ensued, but then I felt that things had run their course for the time, and turned my attention to other, personal matters. A long hiatus followed, during which I moved to Hobart, Tasmania. A few years ago I found myself becoming interested once again in realising some of my musical aims, and to that end began setting up my own studio here in Tasmania, so that I could record and produce music. In the past three years I have been steadily producing a body of new work."

Essentially, it is a means of express our inner-selves, and to research what is known to re-evaluate old ways of thinking and feeling, in favour of new concepts. The project has evolved to a more concrete and musical structure, and today is a constantly evolving set of electro music, from melodic glitch to the explosion of rhythms. Eto Ami: 2 Pieces

little yellow square to open it in a pop-up window]

The duo of Dean King and Tomas Phillips came together as Eto Ami in 2000 with the mere intention of exploring a shared aesthetic. This partnership soon developed a trajectory of its own, however, compelling us to push the compositional process towards further levels of refinement and performative dexterity. What this continues to mean for us is the achievement of a balance between digital and non-digital sound and a functional recognition of their differences in terms of utility and signification. Whilst computer technology remains central to our work, we make an effort to locate composition within a space of physicality, a space in which the composing subject(s) is allowed to "become," in the language of Deleuze, alongside the relative self-sufficiency of software. Hence our use of acoustic instrumentation and field recordings gathered on the periphery of laptops. By extension, we seek to foreground the act of listening (as composers and audience alike) in the slowly evolving tradition of microsound, without precluding the possibility of active and engaged harmony. Implicit in our work, then, is the notion that melodiousness does not necessarily imply a compromised territorialization. Their website is available at: www.etoami.com

Existential Dilemma: Ariadne

3:57

5.6 mb

Existential Dilemma coagulated into a musical entity over the span of about three years, finally churning out sounds at shows in 2001. Over the course of its four year lifespan, Existential Dilemma cycled through 12 members, played 45 shows in the mid western United States, and created five releases. The music of Existential Dilemma was diverse in content and structure, ranging from austere doom-metal lamentations to ethereal ambient improvisations and post-rock interludes. Though there was no consistent conceptual goal of the band, a reoccurring theme was an interest in creating subjective music. To that end, lyrics were never distinguishable and songs were never "about" anything, allowing the listeners to assign their own meaning. Existential Dilemma disbanded in May of 2005 and is currently planning two post-humus releases. This currently unreleased song titled "Ariadne" will appear on one of them. "Hell-o! My name is Clarissa Ator Jennès. To celebrate my 16th birthday one of my richest uncles (I've got many of them, but they are all poor, mostly) gifted me with a Powerbook. I was deeply into heavy metal and rave dancing back then, so the only thing I did with the new computer was browsing the internet for heavy metal websites and news about illegal raves held in my hometown, which is Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Shortly after that i started my new job as a fashion model, which luckily made me rich enough to travel all around the world and meet a lot of funny people. In the december of the year 2001 I was in London for some fashion work for a international magazine, and with my newly-made english boyfriend for that weekend we went to a club where the DJ spinned a lot of bootlegs and bastard tracks. It was like a thunder hit me!!!! And now I knew what to do with my Powerbook! I started learning how to do dance music with the computer, it took a little months but then I was ready for it. By browsing the Internet I could meet a lot of people music and interesting communities on-line. Also I met Janet Monteiro at a Monsters of Rock and we got alongside brilliantly and I teached the computer music to her! Since we get bored to do the same things always, we thought of using some of our online friends music, that is experimental music and not dance friendly at all, to mix with some pop successs to see what will come out. The name we use "Fainting and hell-o!" comes from a movie of brazilian experimental cinema maker Joao Triesbe Gurùrròa that was Clarissa boyfriend once upon a time. Thanks to you all and lot of kisses!!!"

From the age of 16, FC has recorded music on the go, following classical and contemporary music as it was played in castles, churches, cathedrals and woods. With a friend of his, in year 2000 he founded a little sound recording house and record label devoted to indipendent and rare music productions (www.svana.com). As any other composer fond of dronecore music - music that goes to the core of sound- also FC likes creating "soundscapes" where drones, and sounds as they are - and nothing else - are the protagonists. Fear Falls Burning: Untitled

Fear Falls Burning - vidnaObmana's alter ego is dedicated to the expansive tonal character of the electric guitar. vidnaObmana reinvented himself within this new persona, to avoid obvious and easy comparisons with vidna's existing works and projects. This album contains real-time performances on the electric guitar and vintage and contemporary guitar pedal effects, without post-production editing or additional overdubs. Through the unique wiring of these guitar pedal effects, its single performed guitarchord multiplies and shifts over time into dense and trance-inducing walls of sound. Due to an ongoing fascination for tube and old transitor radio-like mono sounds, the electric guitar is performed in such a way that the music sounds deliberately old and monotonous. All clicks, ticks and cracks are part of the real-time performance, delving into that fine musical line where lo-fi, instrumental post-rock, avant-garde, experimental and industrial meet... Fear Falls Burning - a crossing between the looping of Fripp & Eno's No Pussyfooting and the power dynamics of Sunn O))).

Performed real-time onto digital 2-track without post-productive editing or overdubs, playing Ibanez Prestige & Epiphone Les Paul standard plus guitars in relation to contemporary Boss, Danelectro, Marshall, Electro-harmonix and Line 6 effects.

Luca Bergero was born in Italy in 1980. If his electronic engineering studies helped his meeting with algorhytmic composition, at the same time they gave way to his crisis for technologic music pushing him to the concrete sound. His constant doubt, the desire to bring back art to the state of an unconditioned phenomenon, finally back in man's hands-and the necessity for development contribute to a severe creation balanced between opposite sound sources. In 2003 his lowercase work "Vetri di carta" was produced by S'agita Recordings.
In February 2005 the Portuguese label Creative Sources Recordings released "Pocket Progressive", a trio improvisation recorded along with Luca Sigurtà and Claudio Rocchetti.

Manitù Rossi
is a mysterious character that lives in the heart of the Italian countryside and has always cultivated only two divouring interests, music and God (in their more scabrous aspects). Since 1983 he has tried to channel his inclinations into the work of Le Forbici di Manitù (Manitou's Scissors). To do so, through the years he has recruited in the ranks of the group some of the most awkwardly ingenious personalities of the Italian underground, including Satana Cianciulli (outsider noise-maker and would-be serial killer), Enrico Marani (photo/graphic artist and audio-sculptor) and Vittore Baroni (mail artist and counter-culture vulture). In over twenty years of enigmatic activities and more than seven albums recorded for respected Italian and international labels, the band has become a legend on its own terms, refusing to follow trends while proving to be well versed in the most disparate musical idioms, from luscious trance-ambient to monumental sci-fi soundtracks, from conceptual noise to neo-prog chamber music, from techno-glitch to situ-plagiarist lounge. "F.ormal L.ogic D.ecay (at first simply called F.L.D.) depicts the more experimental and unforeseeable amidst my musical projects: the true essence of sonorous research free from any kind of restriction of genre. I came nearer to this artistic proposal during teens, lightened by John Cage's practices for piano (instrument now I play since 24 years), but what brought me to try this expressive path was the listening of some works from the Schaeffer's Concrete Music circle and some of my always favoured acts like T.G., B.Lustmord or Whitehouse, composers like Vangelis, Jarre to band as Kraftwerk or E.N. Since at that time (during the first years of 90's) I didn't have a PC, I made the first raw recordings on a simple analogic multitracker, without the courage to spread my stuff in a mind-closed scene like the Italian one, saved only by a few persons whom unluckily at that time I didn't know yet. A lot of those tapes are actually lost, erased or never finished, but I'm still working on their meticulous restoration. Around the middle of the 90's I began to also appreciate the more extreme experimentations from the Nipponic Noise scene and I enriched my production of what I called "noise-conceptualizations" with intended low-fi and frequencies-saturation works (later on I knew the term "power-electronics", I presume fit). About 10 years after my first experimentations I felt the need to spread some of my latest works signed as F.L.D., but always among a very restricted circle of open-minded listeners, such as I think you who're reading be..." Born in 1967, Daniela Gherardi actually lives in Rome. Passionate of music and piano since she was very young, in 1983 starts to play electronic keyboards, and in early 90's starts to realize and record ambient-electronic compositions that in 1992 will be collected in the self-produced MC titled "Passages". In the following years she stopped composition activity, and starts to collaborate with Giuseppe Verticchio, consolidating and extending during the time her rule of collaborator, becaming integrant and essential part of Nimh's project, the moniker used by Giuseppe Verticchio since 2001 to sign his musical productions. The collaboration still continues, and Verticchio gave his technical support for recording of this new version of "Passage II", a track originally released on the overmentioned MC, and now exceptionally re-arranged and and re-proposed for Afe Records decennary.

is a young, but rather well-known electronic experimentalist from Moscow. He started his experiments with noise in 2003 with the CD-R project. He perfomed many live shows and released 6 albums. He recently quitted harsh and digital noise and started to develop his own conception of "architectural music" - clear sound (almost without FX processing), clear composition combined with laconic harmony laws. The idea of "music for the head" is shown as an interesting combination of concrete music elements and meditave minimal noise. His personal website is available at:

Gydja: Alchemia

5:53

8.3 mb

Gydja, an Old Norse word for "priestess", was adopted as a musical name by Abby Helasdottir in 1995, with the aim of creating music that could be used for magickal and shamanic purposes. Some of the earliest ideas involved using field recordings, and basing whole pieces on these sounds in a largely unprocessed way. This is still a concern of Gydja, but with more emphasis now being placed on abstracting these sounds so that, whilst they retain a sense of their original source, they become something else entirely. The current style of Gydja differs from the initial intentions of the project, with music of both a mundane and magickal nature being created. And whilst the music is usually linear and could be defined as a soundscape, it is also not necessarily always dark ambient in style, embracing electro-acoustic and experimental techniques. Works designed specifically for magickal use sit alongside explorations of sound for sound's sake; and in a third tier, some exploration of sound contain magickal themes, even if there is no practical magickal application intended... Abby contributed to afe024box under the Xindur X moniker, more informations about her music works are available on her beautiful website: www.gydja.com

Based in London and dedicated to a punk ethos of "Does it really need to be cleaned up?" (as much as is possible when at the helm of a laptop), Hay has been making noise for some years now: previously and still annually in 'Zuly Schwaa' - with Swift (check him out) and also solo as Hay. Any sounds that can be caught are often put in the Hay pot and seasoned according to taste. Any machines that can speak are also welcomed into the pot where they are encouraged to fulfil their sonic dreams. The main means of distribution for Hay music is donation via the London Underground system - remember always check your seat as you could be the lucky recipient of a new Hay EP. Or if you can't wait for fate to find you, you could always e-mail hayspace@yahoo.ca with your address and one will be couriered to you by sea turtle. Hats off, and nods towards Mr. B. Horchata
is the name used by Michael Palace for his electronic music compositions. His music focuses on four major elements: complex beat music, dark ambient soundscapes, programmed compositional glitch music, and field recordings. Often a composition will include several of these elements. Palace has worked for a number of years as a research scientist at the University of New Hampshire's Complex System Research Center. His work there focuses on necromass or dead wood in Amazonia. During his numerous field visits to the rainforest, he has recorded sounds using various microphones and minidisk recorders. Modification of many computer simulations have yielded some interesting sound generating and compositional programs which are featured in newer recordings by Palace. Finally, video and images have begun to feature more in Palace's live performances, using video that was shot in Amazonia and generated by computer programs.

Hudak, John: Love Song of M

John Hudak has been interested in sound and music from the age of four when he began to play a variety of instruments. At the University of Delaware (BA, English 1981) and Naropa Institute for the Arts (1979), he studied video, photography, creative writing and dance. He then began to create taped soundtracks for his solo performance art pieces. In recent years, he has concentrated on sound, particularly natural sounds. Hudak's current sound work focuses on the minimalism and repetition of sounds below the usual threshold of hearing, sounds that are filtered out or considered non-musical. These sounds are recorded, deconstructed and processed, their rhythms and textures being the basis for aural manipulations. This bio is taken from his personal website available at:

Krell is the researcher musicologist for the lost music. He started studing a metallic leage asteroid that Nasa discovered in 1956 beyond the Kuiper belt, not far from the Oort cloud. Their composition had aided the accumulation of a large quantity of electromagnetism. Analysing this energy there he found informations and traces of music of an ancient civilization. These sounds (that excedes the human audible frequencies) were normalized to our audible scale by Krell (in "A la Recherche du Krell Perdu" CD). In his second work, Krell analysed the traces of ancient Egyptian electronic instruments from some raffiguration in Dendera and then he re-built some of these to re-compose the ancient electronic music of Egyptians (soon in "Electronic Music of Dendera"). Krell lives in Italy in a nice underground home, he's obsessed by hystory and continuity. His weblog is available at: kippleblog.splinder.com

The Kuig project was born in 2000. Its only member is an italian boy born in 1982: Giorgio Presti. Until 2004 the project was only intended to "experiment" and "try" some ideas, it was only a way to let him communicate with himself... From dark and violent atmospheres to extreme minimalism. So the great amount of songs written in those years was left "unheared" by the most. Finally, someone asked Kuig to sonorize some event in Brescia (Giorgio is known for his Industrial-rock side-project Son of Noise and for his production and engineering of some friends' bands). Surprised by the good feedback he decided to publish some of his works, that are not limited to electronic music, but includes also film photography, minimal and abstract, a great hobby of him. Currently Giorgio is a sound engineer in the mastering studio "Eclisse" (Milan, Italy), he is studying "Music Communication Sciences and Technologies" in Milan. His website is available at:

"Lava is a two men no-band: a034 + Bruno Dorella. It can be considered a no-band because it's a ghost. The few times we played together it was in my house and we met with the aim to produce tracks for compilations. We played live in just one occasion: Milano-Sqott, at "The First Powernoise Massacre Festival". Lava work is ambient-noise, distortions and clean guitar arpeggios meet electronic drones and industrial rhythms for a hot-spiced dark atmosphere. Everything is improvised. The Lava work is split on many compilation and it has never been unified, but one day it will."

Lavelle, Brian: They Gather

7:32

10.6 mb

Brian Lavelle
was born in 1972 in Glasgow, Scotland and now lives in Edinburgh. He has been creating music for around 15 years using a variety of electronic devices. His compositions showcase resonant and textural layers of digital material, drones and processed field recordings. His most famous works are probably the "Radios" series, composed along with Richard Youngs, but we can't help mentioning his wonderful "How To Construct A Time Machine" guitar suite released by Staalplaat's subsidiary Bake Records and "fault/r", released on Microwave Records back in 2000. Brian is a member of Inversion along with Alistair Crosbie (...of d/compute fame...) an electronic duo which recorded constantly over a number of years but released very little indeed. They are also making music together as Fifth House, an improvising piano and guitar outfit, and, more recently, under their own names. Brian curated the techNOH online mp3 label between 2000 and 2003. His music was featured on afe50005. His website is available at: brnlvll.org

In 2004, Pierpaolo Leo worked for Soundres: a festival of sound and sound-installations with David Cossin, Mark Stewart and David Sheppard. In collaboration with Urkuma he presented the audio-visual installation Finisterrae's Cronotopo: taking Murray Schaffer's soundscapes as reference, recording 30 seconds of sound every 5 kilometers along Salento's coast (the "heel" of Italy), from Jonic coast to Adriatic coast. 185 kilometers were scoured and "recorded" passing trough "Finisterrae's coast", which was considered the border-land of the south-east of Italy (see it on www.quantize-records.com). Pierpaolo Leo also collaborates with Populous. He was featured on afe060lcd.

Solzenycin.

Rafal Sadej, the body behind the soul of Moan, was born and brought up in Siemianowice Slaskie, Poland, in the midst of atmosphere and sounds of industrial enviroment of ironworks and coal-mines, producing whole lot of unnatural sounds inscribing themselves into ordinariness of surrounding districts. You only need to open a window in Rafal's apartament at night in order to realize why there is a such natural intuition of machine harmony in his music. In Rafal's music you can find a nocturnal silence filled with barely audible distant humming, grating metallic sounds, pulse of the machines and even noise or chaos. Monoid is an industrial project by Martin Steinebach which was started in 1996 as a loud and dirty alternative to Conscientia Peccati, his ritual, ethnic and neo-classical project. The first releases consisted of minimal, hard and rhythmic tracks suitable for industrial dance floors. The tapes released by A&T Records are a good document of this. Later releases added ambient and experimental to the sound of Monoid, sometimes even the giving a hint of a melody, like in the "Totalausfall" CD released by White Head or "Schnittstellen" released by Fusion Audio. Today Monoid offers a broad range of styles form hard rhythmic noise to dark ambient industrial soundscapes. His website is available at: www.go.to/monoid

"Mote was born just to play "one in location"!!! Mote is a duo, electronics, guitars, flutes, vocals and other peanuts... After the "one in location" session, the two members of Mote, Luca Mauri and Graffo, decided to have more fun recording a full length album entitled "Kubaita" that was released on Binaric Records in 2000. The track "La bambina sull'altalena" was originally published on that release. One day Mr. Afeman told us: "Hey, I wanna do the Teddy Bear Remix Project!"; we said: "Wow, that's great!" and recorded "Teddy Bear and the Cherry Witch Behind a Bush" an acoustic gne-gne gne-gne song that was included in the "Teddy Bear RemixProject" 4xCD box-set compilation. Mote recorded some other guitar-bass-flute-clap-claptracks; but, so far, these songs are lost somewhere... but we don't care. Anyway... Mote has never been on this planet!!!"

Lino Greco
(visual) and Daniela Cattivelli (sound) created Mylicon/EN in 2002. Mylicon/EN is a duo involved in experimental and alternative ways of conceiving audio-video live act, recovering performativity and concreteness through the use of analogical and mechanical devices in the production of images. Their works focus on the interaction between analog or mechanical devices with the digital realm. Visual texture is manipulated according to sound, and the audience is given a double view, i.e. both of the spectacular outcome and of the actions producing it. During their improvisations and creation sessions they use many different common objects like glasses, plastics, water, etc. to create sound and images. The audience get the chance of a double vision during the performance: next or under the screen, they can watch the action generating the visual. The live audio is composed by pre-recorded music excerpts, re-edited and remixed with some sounds and noises produced by the action itself.
Mylicon/En performed audiovisual live-set in many festivals around Europe. Before taking part to Mylicon/En duo Lino Greco and Daniela Cattivelli have been involved in experimental music and experimental film and video, they organized festivals and related events, realised videos and cd's and also collaborated with a wide range of artists and musicians.

The Mystery School is - as its name implies - musically ethereal and otherworldly. Its music is soft, even perhaps understated, but uses unorthodox instrumentation. The lyrical content is equally unorthodox, a poetic revision of insights from various branches of forbidden knowledge which include alchemy and the occult. The Mystery School is a collective led by Carlos Boll. His songs are rounded out by lyrical contributions from Brad Orgeron. The more exotic instrumentation and arrangements are aptly directed by Akbar Del Piombo. Their website is available at: www.themysteryschool.net.

Nefelheim started to play electric guitar at 13, influenced by Hard-Rock and Heavy Metal. Many years later, during 2000, he recorded "Darkness" (an unreleased CD-R) using a midi synthesizer: the trademark gloomy sound of Nefelheim was born. Soon followed "Yggdrasill", 45 minutes of true electronic dark ambient. Later, he used electric and acoustic guitars along with concrete sounds to create deeper and atmospheric tracks. After his third work entitled "Earth Purification" (a MiniCD-R) and the deep drones based "Shadow's Dwelling", he collaborated with Nimh (Giuseppe Verticchio) on a project called "Whispers From the Ashes" that was released on CD by the italian label Amplexus in 2003. Reviewed on magazines and webzines, Nefelheim's albums draw obscures paths in his listeners' brains with echoing and melanconic melodies. His website is available at: web.tiscali.it/nefelheim

Norm: Pippa On My Mind [For Afe Version]   Some graphics by Hue

4:52

6.9 mb

"Norm has been, over the years, made up of about eight people. When we were born, we were three. It was 1996, and me, Ago, and Lu thought that it would be nice to transform into music our anxieties, sadnesses, ideas, boredoms, delusions, obsessions, etc... Suddenly Xo joined us and then, a bit by chance a bit by coercion, many other friends began to participate: Suca, Camillo, Fac, Paolino, etc... sometimes with a whispered sentence in a track, some others with true instrumental featurings. All our earlier tracks were made in our own houses (and you can read the 'story' behind it on our website); almost every song was completed in summer time, in late July sunny days, when we also played new stuff and mixed old ones. We can say we are a group in constant mutation, also without any plans. Today (2001), everything is a bit different, the music too and the way we play: we close ourselves in a cheap recording studio, usually an old abandoned factory called SILOS, then we improvise obsessive tracks that begin on a electronic rhythm (invented there by Hue) that moves with the other instruments, played by Cris (guitar and drums), Ago (bass), Lele (keyboards and videos) and Xo (drums). But it's not always so: if it happens, we exchange our places, or sometimes there's someone else with us, like Pino or MC Long, improviser drummers. We try to have fun, to vent fury, even if we are not able to play. The most incredible thing is that we enjoy listening to ourselves. The others usually don't. The cows outside the SILOS don't like us either."

Normality/Edge: Of Bones of Girls   Some graphics by Hue

7:58

11.3 mb

In 1994, during his university studies in multimedia communications at the Faculty of Design in Milan (his hometown), Matteo Uggeri - aka Hue - started making musical/sound experiences using an old PC and creating rhythms putting some sticky tape on vinyls: this is how Der Einzige, a cheap and extreme project made in collaboration with his friend Camillo, was born. Since 1995, along with Agostino Brambilla and all the other artists that joined in later (Xo, Lu, Lele and Cris), he released a lot of songs and albums with the New Wave / Industrial / Rock band Norm, which is still alive and kicking nowadays. After he purchased a new powerful PC (for those days - 1995), he began experimenting with sound editors cutting and pasting in a 'visual way' to build rhythms and overlaying sounds through mixing/paste special features. The result of this slow and often stressing work was Nervous System Overload, now available on request as the sixth disc of Inner Photographs. This new musical project was called Normality/Edge and was obsessively focused on the bound of what people usually conceive as normal or ab-normal. At those times he was influenced by the old industrial generation (Throbbing Gristle, Cabaret Voltaire, SPK, Controlled Bleeding) and by the 80s Gothic / New Wave music (The Cure, Bauhaus, Joy Division...). The Normality/Edge opera omnia was released on Afe as afe50010. Normality/Edge's website is on-line at: www.ne.moriremotutti.com

OvO: L'anno del cane [Alternative Version]   A picture

OvO is a project of music and life. OvO are Stefania Pedretti (also singer and guitar player of Allun) and Bruno Dorella (ex Wolfango, Bugo, Lava, now involved in many bands and boss of Bar La Muerte records), often joined by friends that belong to many different musical scenes. Bruno and Stefania basically started this project to stay together: they were used to follow their partner's different bands on tour, but they were also sick of the problems that every band has connected with the members lives, works, studies. It was natural for them to form an open but autonomous duo, free to tour and record with or without the collaboration of other musicians. A lifestyle project, so. Or the last frontier of DIY, or the maximum freedom level.

Paradin: Topography of Smoke

25:26

35.8 mb

Paradin is the mysterious alter-ego of the American ambient artist Ben Fleury-Steiner. The project is best captured in the words of Mystery Sea founder, Daniel Crokaert: "Paradin traffics in dark, organic worlds. Deep within damp walls, an inner map breathes, an enveloping net of veinings and stria, a mesh of buried rumblings and geologic oozings. A sea of scintillations, bioluminescent pulses & archaic signals. The sounds exhale long enclosed memories, interpreting scars and grooves of dripping stones in analogous aural forms. Following the inescapable streaming, the drift of mineral debris and sedimental erosion, we then dissolve in a world of penumbra and glimmers, secrets and unspoken, confronting an unknown founder source." Passo Uno (Milan 2005) proposes to realize sonorous atmospheres closely tied to the relationship with the image, static or in motion. The sound research, in relation to what is shown through visual suggestions, is the only starting point. The attitude is placed among the ambient-noise, field recordings and melodic research. The purpose is approachin' in the best way the musical intention hiding behind an image and to suggest the listening, creating a tight cohesion between image and sound but respecting the single fruibility of both these elements.

Quiet American: Kagbeni: The Lost Variation

1:08

1.6 mb

Aaron Ximm (b. 1970) is a San Francisco-based field recordist and sound artist. Since 1998 his work as Quiet American has focused on composing evocative but nonliteral soundscapes using only the intimate recordings he collects while traveling. From initial work constructed primarily as intuitive impressionist portraits, Ximm has recently gravitated towards more rigorous conceptual and methodical techniques, with the intention of also exploring the less visceral and more subtle applications of field recording. Ximm's recordings and compositions have appeared in a variety of contexts, including in galleries, performances, and on the radio. His most popular project, One-Minute Vaction, is now available as a weekly podcast. From 2001 until 2005, Ximm curated and hosted the Field Effects concert series at his warehouse in San Francisco. The series, which was committed to presenting experimental sound and media work based on field recordings and found materials in a maximally comfortable environment, ended earlier this year when the space was lost. Many hours of recordings and compositions are available for free download at: www.quietamerican.org

Track information: "last year I finished my a full-scale release, Kagbeni Variations - you can find it in the "discography" section of my website. It is a two-disc release: disc one is a 3" with a single 20-minute unedited field recording from Kagbeni, Nepal. Disc two is a full-length consisting of 32 "variations" made by processing different excerpts from the source recording. For disc two I made several hundred "variations," from which I had to chose the thirty two that best realized the goal of the project - to explore as "etudes" for myself the consequences of many variations on the idea of looping, which is so simply and compelling but so dangerous and boring at the same time. None is simple looping. The track I am contributing was the last one to be cut from the release proper; I like it very much but I couldn't include it if I wanted to have exactly 32 on the release (which I did). I am happy for it to have an honorable home with you for this project. Like almost all my composition work, this track was made entirely by processing field recordings - no additional source was used."

Retina.it is Lino Monaco and Nicola Buono. They met during the early 90s when they were both engaged in various neapolitan clubs. Sharing the same interests, tastes and bents on music, they decided to create something together. In 1994 they met DJ Rino Cerrone and gave birth to Qmen and had three 12" released on italian and foreign labels. From the ashes of Qmen, the Retina.it project arised. Chicagoan Hefty Records was impressed by their music and released their debut LP, "Volcano Waves 1-8", in 2001: 8 tracks of experimentation, space passages and rhythmic vibrations, heritage of a common Techno background never denied. Some more 12"s and EPs were subsequently released. While waiting to release a new full-lenght work, Retina.it appeared on many compilations, including "Recycling Buzz" on the french label Amanita Records, "Batofar cherche l'Italie", released by Batofar of Paris, and the two Hefty collections "Immediate Action" and "Sample This" (the latter enclosed with "The Wire" magazine). They remixed a track by 99 Posse ("La gatta mammona") and approached some collaborations with DRM and Nous (an electronic music project created by Marco Messina and Maria di Donna). Among their latest productions we remember "The Reingagement EP", released in mp3 format on the Ctrl+Alt+Canc net-label, and the participation to "Output 01", a sound document about their exhibition at St. Severo al Pendino's church in 2001 during the Sintesi festival. In 2003, along with Marco Messina, they gave birth to their own Label "Mousike Lab" which released Resina's (Retina. It + Marco Messina) debut work entitled "Opinio Omnium".

Rubber O Cement is a futuristic band throw-back as they try to make the world they've seen with algea hive brain eyes with cardboard and foam engineering. Not having the tools invented to make the actual computers and gene engineering they use whatever material is available in a cargo-cult look at the world ahead. A giant computer presides over a few oddly genetically messed with club footed infant monster-man-box like things draped in dragon and bat jet fuselage hampered by cubist wrongness and synth sounds. The synth sounds are augumented by sounds like scrape screams supplied by a tortured bass guitar. Rubber O Cement has attracted international attention and has worked with the japanese to create a better look at the future as their tour there gained them a noteriety as 'cardboard physicists'. From Milan (Italy), 4 people, 13 instruments... Since 1994, year of formation, R.U.N.I. have always tried to conceive music in its widest meaning: inspiration source is therefore daily life, meaning silence, rather than traffic, or the possibility to use what the current technology offers to us. The songs of R.U.N.I. want therefore to be spontaneous and simple, using experimental expressive forms or not, which characterize also the live experiences of the band. Alex de K, who was active in The Kazuyuchy, a japanese punk band met Special and Max in Tokyo in 1995. They recorded many songs mixing their own extremely different tastes, using acoustic instruments and various electronic devices adding simple but very effective lyrics to their music. They defined their style as Unsuitable Rock and choose the Sam & Valley moniker to present their work to the world. It didn't take very long before their incredible mixture of electronics, ultra-pop and japanese glamour got noted. "My Favorite Clinic" was released in 1997 on Aphex Twin's Rephlex label and aptly spreaded their fame of "Computer Rock sensation" outside of their native country. Following the success of their debut album, another full-lenght CD, "Unsuitable Japanese"", was released in Europe on Angelika Koehlermann. Their third CD album entitled "Torso" was released in 1999 on the canadian label Awhisp, soon followed in 2000 by "A Miracle is Simple", once again on Angelika Koehlermann. Later on, Sam & Valley were so kind to join in the Teddy Bear Remix Project on Afe providing two of the best remixes of the original Wolkspurz & Ramirez title track.

Sig. Sapio produces "sociophobic" music which has exclusively been shared with few friends since 2002. As all the frustrated 'Cantautori' he gives vent to his feelings playing in a Punk/New Wave band called Nòi at pyjamas 'sbarby' parties et similia. Accidentally/luckily, he was involved in the Ghirigori project (a compilation released by Produzioni Pezzente) with the song "Bianca". During Summer of 2005, pushed by several friends and companions of bad lucks, he decided to assemble a series of songs composed between July 2004 and July 2005, giving birth to "Acufeni", his first EP.

Sparkle in a Voice was a project by Hue (Sparkle in Grey) and Ale V. Their was a mixture of electronic music and heavenly voices, with a little bit of male vocals too, something in the vein of some typical 4AD-style bands. Not too-dark atmospheres with some field recordings, quiet rhythms and melancholic vocal melodies are more or less the essence of Sparkle in a Voice' music. The collaboration Between Ale V. and Hue lasted only one complete album, recorded during 2001 and mixed in 2002. Its title is "The Gift of Beauty". Sparkle In Grey: Temporary Delusion Song [For
Afe]

4:16

This new musical project was called Normality / Edge and was obsessively focused on the bound of what people usually conceive as normal or ab-normal. Later, along with Marco Volpi (Happiness Repealed), he founded the EBM group Human_Against_Hope, where he singed and screamed. Thanks to Volpi he started using a PC sequencer that soon became Normality / Edge main instrument. In 1999 Hue changed his mind and 'soul' and stopped making music using the Normality / Edge and Human Against Hope monikers. Now he works at the Politechnic of Milan as a graphic and teacher, and keeps on producing music with Norm and his new Sparkle in Grey and Sparkle in a Voice projects. He was featuerd on afe024box, afe024mp3, afe058lcd, afe060lcd and afe50010. His main websites are available at:

StillStand is an ambient industrial project by Martin Steinebach active since 1998. Later, the sound range did open to rhythmic elements and environmental recordings. One example of the later concept is "Kreuzung" by Tosom, using recordings of a travel crossing as the sole sound source. The aim of StillStand is to provide audio documents which enable the listener to dive into the sound without strict constrains while at the same time offering enough sensations no to get lost in the void. 4:07

5.8 mb

"Svartsinn is a musical project spawned from my yearning to create sad & dark atmospheric soundscapes that could satisfy the sombre chambers of my soul, to create moods and states of mind for myself. It is the challenging journey to find dark atmospheres and moods through sad & dark soundscapes. A journey into a world where darkness is all and nothing. It can be emotions, a mind struggle or the imagination taking a journey to a vast land of tall desolate mountains with caves and thick, dark forests shielding us from the light of day. In short, the darkness is all around us or inside each and everyone of us. It's not the fear of it, it's merely where we want to be, prosper in darkness..."

Svartsinn's website is available at: www.svartsinn.com

"Northaunt started in 1996, our aim was and is to create atmospheric, melancholic ambient mixing environmental recordings and minimalistic melodic elements (usually piano or guitar). Treated nature sounds, samples and bits of melodies mix and flow like ice down a stream. We make landscapes from sound, and sounds from landscapes. Landscapes we all know somewhere inside our hollow vessels. Places we long for, places we have been. A deeper understanding lies hidden in man, man's relationship with his instincts, and his own nature."

Telepherique was born in 1989 as a solo project of Klaus Jochim from Würzburg, Germany. His wife Danijela and his brother Rene Jochim joined him in 1992. Telepherique is the french word for funicular railway. an apt metaphor for communication from a lower to an higher lever. Since the beginning Telepherique showed a clear intention to explore different processes and collaborate with other artists and people of different cultures. Their sound is rooted in the smoother zone of radical industrial music, though hinting at early seventies's cosmic couriers (Kluster, Conrad Schnitzler, Klaus Schulze and Tangerine Dream), with a sharper and less intrusive rhytmic edge. Many other individuals joined in for specific projects, and during the years Telepherique collaborated with other estabilished artists such as Ultra Milkmaids, Roger Rotor, De Fabriek, Brume, Contagious Orgasm, K2, Aube and many more. Their music has been released worldwide on labels such as Ant-Zen, Noise Museum, SSSM, Old Europa Cafe, Rendez Vous Radikal, etc. They were featured on afe031lcd, afe046lcd and afe059cd. Troum: Dhànu-h

Troum is a duo located in Bremen, Germany, established in early 1997. The two members "Glit[S]ch" and "Baraka[H]" were active before in the influental ambient industrial group Maeror Tri (which existed from 1988 to 1996). Troum is the old german word for "dream". The dream seen as a central manifestation of the unconscious symbolizes the aim of Troum to lead the listener into a hypnotizing dream-state of mind, a pre-verbal and primal consciousness sphere. Troum uses music as the direct path to the Unconscious, pointing to the archaic "essence" of the humans inner psyche. Troum tries to create music that works like a direct transformation of unconscious matter. Troum's creations are influenced by post-industrial, minimal and drone-music. Both members use guitar, bass, voice, accordion, balalaika, flute, mouth-organ, melodica, gong, field recordings, pre-recorded-tapes and a diversity of sound-objects to build a kind of multi-layered and highly atmospheric dreaming-muzak. Their sound could be described as "dark atmospheric ambient industrial", "transcendental noise" or just "Tiefenmusik". Troum doesn't work with samplers or computers, the sounds are created "by hand" to reach a broader sensibility. Troum uses a spiral as their logo, expressing the trance-inducing potential of the music and the wish to reach inner, deeper spheres of the mind with it. Music as a door to unknown & alien dimensions. Music as an expression of the mystery of existence itself. Their website is available at: www.troum.com

Urkuma with Popp0: Live at Microalberghetto

[This is a special contribute, please click on the

Urkuma is Stefano De Santis, born in the south-east of Italy in the beautiful Salento/Finisterrae region. Starting from writing for theatre (the name of Urkuma's website "www.sanfocahotel.com" is the title of a surrealistic plot about the problem of refugees), he developed a personal way to express his theatrical texts in sound. The word "urkuma" is an idiomatic expression of his Salento-region: Urkuma is the opposite of buddhist-Nirvana's concept and it-he-she is entropic-anarchic-heterogeneous.

Popp0 / !((0rkza1 was born a lot of time ago in Milan (Italy). He made his first noise-tunes using a Commodore Vic20 during first 80's, when he was a little kid. Growing up he went on till now playing noisy tunes for fun using different softwares, computers, turntables and other improvised pseudo-instruments. Almost all his tunes are played and recorded live and based on direct sounds and loops manipulation. His website is available at: www.oscillator707.net/popp0

Use of Ashes, The: Spacelane Master

The Use Of Ashes is cinematic, dim and explores caves of a dreamworld, challenging the listener to accompany the band on a journey in its world. The music creates a strange image of sounds with a vigorous atmosphere, familiar and at the same time alienating from today's life. A reissue of "The Castle of Fair Welcome", originally released under the Mekanik Kommando flagship from whom the band arises, marks the start of The Use of Ashes in 1988. In 1990 Japanese label Mash Records releases the Castle album plus extra songs on a selftitled CD. Shortly after that the band starts working on a new studio album. During that process The Use of Ashes falls apart with Peter van Vliet becoming the sole remaining member... The band finally finishes recordings for the album, "Fire Tree", which is being released in 1996 by Italian label Mellow Records. Just after the release of "Fire Tree", the band gets in touch with ToneFloat. In May 1997 ToneFloat releases its first Use Of Ashes song, the beautiful Moongarden, on white vinyl. This single also marks the first sessions in the current line-up now also featuring Maarten Scherrenburg. After a short tour with UK band Porcupine Tree, The Use of Ashes starts working on new songs, which end up on a 6-track 10" album entitled "Albion Moonlight" shortly after. The album reflect the changes The Use Of Ashes has gone through. More upfront and much more with its eyes wide open to the world. In the early months of 1999, the band signs a one album deal with the Brooklyn, New York, based The Wild Places for a CD release of "Albion Moonlight". Most of 1999 is spent on preparations on future releases, of which the first one, "The Rosebud Years", is out in February 2000. The lavishly handmade designed 3LP Box includes the previously unreleased album called "Three Men and a Boat". In the finest Use of Ases tradition, the recording and production of the long awaited studio CD "Ice 67" took four years and was very well received, specially in unexpected darker areas such goth and metal. In the summer of 2005 an album is recorded for the new ToneFloat imprint C, which also features releases by artists such as Bass Communion and Fear Falls Burning. The band is currently recording new songs for an upcoming album. Their website is available at: www.useofashes.com

Veneziani, Paolo: DS Follower

3:03

Paolo Veneziani's project effectuates an interesting travel among different folds of today electronic music. Sounding patterns and strained clatters, deconstructed and reconstructed in tracks with diaphanous architectures, trace the path of "Alphabet", then took up in "Lambda Suite", where the ambient of Fax and Rising High is reinterpreted and approached to the chattering and to the electroacoustic clatters reverberated and distorted. "Loop, Are You Circular?" is of a different structure and artistic conception, where rhythmic odd lines pipe out, on a side surgically minced, on the other experimentations as microwaves. Weltschmerz: Undersound

4:58

7.0 mb

The Weltschmerz "project" arose in 1994, after Anthony Duman's experience in 1989 as the former Monumentum's bass player. Weltschmerz current incarnation revolves around five members: Nothing (Anthony), Prejudice, Malice, Indifference and Desire. One of the meanings of the Weltschmerz word from the German is "The Pain of the World"; a sense of deep Nostalgia for the Endless, a dive in the more unknown sides of our condition in relationship to the whole Kosmos. The dark and dramatic side of the music of Weltschmerz is deliberate and tries to reflect, to exorcize it, the actual condition of the human being, that wanders without destination between the more unbridled materialism in search of an objective reality of life. Weltschmerz's website is available at: www.weltschmerz.8m.net

We Wait The Snow: Forgotten

3:40

5.2 mb

"?Alos" is a performance focused on stealing private moments showing them in public. In "?Alos" Stefania Pedretti gets into the room as a little lonely ugly marginal but romantic dreamer-woman (as the ones she draws in her paintings), who gets ready for a lonesome candlelight dinner. She represents the dressing and making up, and she'll really cook. In the meantime she'll play, using her unique voice, her original guitar style, her violin and the great music appositively created by musicians such as Mae Starr, Jacopo Andreini and Christian Rainer. All of it will have surprises and moments of tenderness, sadness, sweetness, with the unique style Stefania puts in all her other musical, performative and artisitic projects. The five senses are all involved: of course sight and oule, but also taste and odorat (the dinner) and toucher (she'll touch people of the crowd, she'll invite one of them to eat with her, preparing him and coiffering him)."?Alos" is usually connected to her "L'indiscreta" exhibition, also focused on showing private objects and moments in public.
